Outback Banksia 5, 6 from Virtual Quilter

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY

I am celebrating with some Banksia Blocks … the different Banksia shrubs have several very different flower shapes in a variety of colours including assorted shades of yellow, orange and red.

The settings I have used are much more formal than the Aussie bush … perhaps the influence of large cities around the coast.

Around the country we will celebrate with BBQs, swimming at the beach or local and private pools, watching cricket and tennis live and on TV … it is going to be a hot day so I will be watering my garden and trying to keep in ...

Outback Banksia 1, 2 from Virtual Quilter

First design in a new project file, experimenting with layouts based on pieced block designs. Using applique blocks is interesting because square designs placed in a rectangular are distorted, which sometimes works well, other times not so well.

A different layout from a different pieced block design which I think might be interesting to keep playing with, though I do have another couple of pieced blocks picked out to use in this project.

Then will have to add some quilting!

Outback Banksia Intro from Virtual Quilter

In Electric Quilt 8 we can use Pieced Block Designs as quilt layouts, providing only straight lines forming squares and rectangles are used.

The blocks above are the blocks I have chosen from my collection to use with applique block designs in a project Outback Banksias.

When the block is used as quilt layout the blocks can be drafted to fit the size and shape of the block, but I find that adding teh same block everywhere in the setting is the easiest way to have my first look at what happens when square blocks are used in rectangles.
